LENT at St Luke - Beginning February 2015

    1/29/2015

    Picture
Lent begins Wednesday, February 18th with Ash Wednesday. Lent is a traditional time for Christians to rededicate themselves to Christ in anticipation for Easter. This may involve removing harmful habits or starting helpful ones. At St Luke we challenge you to join a Lenten Small Group for a 5 or 6 week period during Lent. We have two excellent choices for Lenten small groups, 40 Days of Loveand Claimed, Gathered, Sent, A Guide for Conversation.

    Take UP a small group
One of our St Luke 7 Marks is to Nurture relationships to encourage spiritual growth. This mark of ministry can be strengthen by joining a Lenten small group. The small groups will be held on Sundays during Sunday school or multiple times during the week.

Lift UP your hands in prayer
A second St Luke Mark of Ministry is to Pray daily. For Lent we will have a daily prayer devotional available for you. The devotional will have a daily Bible reading from the Gospel of Matthew. A third Mark of Ministry is to Read the Bible daily. This Lenten Devotional is being provided by the St Luke Capital Campaign and it will be a terrific resource for all the St Luke Saints to study and read the Bible together. During Lent a prayer cross will also be located in the narthex as a place to place your written prayers.

    Give UP to give back
A fourth St Luke mark, Serve at and beyond St Luke, will be highlighted this Lenten season with two fun service opportunities. The first will be done with Heifer International, a Lenten offering called Fill the Ark challenges us to Give up to Give Back. We will put all the money we receive together to help buy a cow, pig or chicks to end hunger for a family in need.

The next opportunity is with Lutheran World Relief. LWR will challenge us to bring one item a week to St Luke during Lent, by the end of Lent we will have enough gathered items for a Personal Care Kit to be sent overseas to a Lutheran World Relief site.

    Look UP in worship
Add to this an opportunity to Worship Weekly at St Luke on Sundays and on Wednesday's during Lent. Our Wednesday Lenten services will begin at 7:05 and will use Holden Evening Prayer by Marty Haugen as our worship resource. You will love the music and prayers. Dinner will be served in the CFC from 5:00-6:30, so come and enjoy a hot meal, and stay for the service. Your Wednesday's just may be the highlight of your week this Lent.

    Your partner in Ministry,

    Pastor Cliff

New Group for Moms - Starts Feb. 25, 2015

    1/29/2015

    Picture
On February 25th we will  be starting a Mom's Group for women with young children here at St. Luke. Bring your kids for a play date, and meet other moms who are sharing this amazing, crazy, sometimes scary journey we call motherhood.

This group will be a place for moms with young children to be able share in their joys and struggles, to make friends, and for the children to be able to interact with each other outside of the Sunday School classroom. We will have group play dates as well as events just for the adults. At some of our meetings we will be discussing some excerpts from a book called "Hands Free Mama- A Guide to Putting Down the Phone, Burning the To-Do List, and Letting Go of Perfection to Grasp What Really Matters!"  by Macy Stafford.  She also has wonderful blog that is well worth the read.

Join us on February 25th at 10:00 am in the CFC for our first meeting.  We will discuss future meeting times and events as well as have play time for the children.  If you have any questions please contact Jennifer Wright (slymemphis@gmail.com or 870-7495)

    Here at St Luke ...

We seek God. We are a church that seeks to express our love for God in all that we do - with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength (Mark 12:30).
We serve others. The St. Luke church family has a heart to serve the community, loving each other just as God has loved us (John 13:35).
We share our lives together. No one here is perfect - we are all ordinary people who gather together to worship God, grow spiritually, and put our faith into action (James 2:15).
