Memphis Deanery Feeds Souls & Tummies with "Street Church"

    10/18/2016

    Picture
The 4 Memphis deanery congregations, (Epiphany, Living Word, Peace & St Luke) brought "Street Church" to homeless persons for God's Work/Our Hands day, celebrated on Saturday, 9/10.
The event promoted The Carpenter's House, an ecumenical hospitality ministry initiated by Memphis' First United Methodist Church. "Street Church" took place on a downtown corner lot transformed into a sanctuary and buffet station. Pastors co-presided at the half-hour Word & Sacrament service and invited attendees to lector. After worship, attendees were served breakfast and given a one-day bus pass and $5 restaurant card. Thrivent provided grant funding and t-shirts for the needy; donations from Kroger, ChikFilA, and the churches covered remaining expenses. After all attendees were served, a team assisted The Carpenter's House to clean and sort donated clothing. Street Church highlighted the dehumanization of God's people by systemic poverty, and moved many street persons and volunteers to request additional worship opportunities.

Join us on October 30th for our annual Trunk-R-Treat celebration.
Trunk-R-Treat is a fun, safe, and friendly environment where kids can walk around the church parking lot and trick or treat as they go from trunk to trunk. We will have games, food, music, prizes, and of course lots and lots of CANDY!
The games and activities will begin at 4 pm while the adults decorate their cars. Trick or treating will begin at 4:30 (Don't forget to bring your candy to hand out!) and food will be served afterward. All games, food, and activities will be outside so please dress appropriately for the weather.
Trunk-R-Treat is for all ages so bring the whole family and don't forget to invite your friends and neighbors.  We can't wait to see all of your amazing costumes!

    Here at St Luke ...

We seek God. We are a church that seeks to express our love for God in all that we do - with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength (Mark 12:30).
We serve others. The St. Luke church family has a heart to serve the community, loving each other just as God has loved us (John 13:35).
We share our lives together. No one here is perfect - we are all ordinary people who gather together to worship God, grow spiritually, and put our faith into action (James 2:15).
