Director of Music Ministries

Reports to: Senior Pastor

Job Summary

To develop and lead the worship music ministry of St Luke Lutheran Church. This includes working with Pastor, staff, and lay leaders to develop a well-rounded music ministry for worship services and special events that includes both traditional and contemporary styles of music.

Goals

  • Create avenues to encourage congregation participation.
  • Enthusiastically create innovative programs and foster/tweak current programs.
  • Create and maintain a spirit filled and welcoming environment for all visitors and members.

Responsibilities

  • Provide musical accompaniment for all worship services.
  • Facilitate effective musical leadership for all worship services by scheduling musicians and other applicable talent within the congregation.
  • Direct the Praise team, Liturgical Choir and Bell Choir. Lead rehearsals and lead the choirs during worship services.
  • Arrange for substitute musicians for any worship services as needed.
  • Train and prepare Cantors for worship services.
  • Encourage church member participation in the music ministry by recruiting song leaders, instrumentalists, vocalists, choir members, etc.
  • Function as Liaison for children's choir. Lead and/or function as Liaison for youth choir.
  • Provide training and oversight of musical instruments and soundboard.
  • Attend and participate in Worship Committee meetings. Uphold decisions made regarding services.
  • Collaborating with Pastor, Worship, and Council, devise and work within an approved budget for all music ministry related expenses. (The budget is approved by the Council but is developed with Worship and Pastor.)
  • Responsible for ensuring bells are maintained, organ & piano stay tuned, organization of choir room and choir areas, choir robes. Basically, all musical equipment and components.
  • Provide articles for church newsletter and weekly bulletin including but not limited to:
  • a. Rehearsal schedules
  • b. Musical volunteer opportunities
  • c. Music related church events
  • d. Regular updates on music events at St Luke.
  • Maintain the music library, including filing.
  • Assist committees and/or Pastor in planning special events that involve music.
  • Provide written reports once per month to the Pastor and Mutual Ministry chair.
  • Meet regularly with the Pastor to plan music.
  • If possible, attend scheduled staff meetings.

  • Ability to ask for help and/or clarification whenever needed.
  • Fervent desire to be a part of the service. Enthusiasm for the Lord and Worship.

Preferred Education and Skills

  • Bachelor's Degree in music or other related area, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 2+ years church musician experience preferred.
  • Must complete St Luke Lutheran Church background check as well as Children at Risk Training program prior to employment. Some continuing training and/or background check may be required during employment as deemed necessary by Council.
